What You Need To Know About Paint Finishes

Create your dreamy interior design using these tips.

When you enter someone’s home, you are immediately hit by the beauty of their interior design. The choice of paint color and texture might even mesmerize you. How well everything goes together!

Well, turns out there’s quite a lot of work put into creating the perfect home. Who would’ve thought, right? And, of course, that also depends on your own taste and preferences.

But there are a few common pieces of information you need to know about paint finishes and where to use them that might make it easier for you to make the choice.

-----------------------

Types of Paint Finishes and Where to Use Them

The world of painting is wide and var

ied. But if you’re a DIY person or even a person looking to have the job done by a contractor, here is your starting point.

Flat / Matte

Your highly pigmented friend that will conceal any imperfections that might occur (bumps, scratches, etc). Also known as the matte finish, a flat finish will soak up the light. It’s not shiny, and it goes smoother on rough surfaces.

It’s difficult to clean, so it’s not recommended in rooms with high traffic: kitchen, kids' room, bathroom.

Best use: interior walls and ceilings of adults’ bedroom, study room, formal events room.

Eggshell

If you don’t want neither the strong shine of the satin finish nor the totally matte finish of the flat one, eggshell is the best choice for you.

Its soft glimmer will make it suited for pretty much any type of walls. It hides imperfections well, and it’s easier to clean than the flat finish. Its durability is not as high

as the satin finish.

Best use: living room, dining room.

Satin

With more luster than eggshell but still not as glossy as the semi-gloss finish, the satin finish will reflect the light beautifully and give you a sense of openness. It gives the walls a silky feel, but it doesn’t have the strong sheen of the semi-gloss. It’s easy to clean and has a high durability, but it doesn’t hide imperfections too well.

Best use: high-traffic rooms - kitchen, kids' room, bathroom, foyers, hallways.

Semi-Gloss

Love some sheen, but don’t want to overdo it? Give your rooms a nice, subtle shine with the semi-gloss finish. It’s highly durable and sleek, so it will resist hands and moisture. Because of that, it’s really easy to clean. However, as it reflects light, any imperfections will be visible.

Best use: high-traffic rooms (kitchen, bedroom, kids’ room), crown moldings, trims, doors, furniture, windows.

High Gloss

It’s time to shine! The most durable and easiest to clean paint finish, high gloss will bring light into your room. This finish’s glamorous visual effect will impress anyone in no time.

You do need to be careful before applying it - it will show any imperfections! But once it’s on, you can clean it quick and easy.

This type of paint finish usually tends to be more expensive, as the added sheen has additional costs.

Best use: kitchen, cabinets, window trims, furniture, door.

Keep In Mind

When making the choice, it’s not enough to just take into consideration where a paint finish generally goes.

Analyze the position of your home and understand the characteristics of it. How much natural light does each room get? Where does the sunlight land? How much space does the room have? Colors may appear deeper or lighter based on the light. The darker and richer the color, the stronger the sheen.

The texture of the wall can be an obstacle. Smooth out the walls to be able to use any paint finish. If you don’t, on the bumpy walls you will have to use flat paint finish to hide the imperfections.

How much traffic will the room get? Don’t make your life harder by choosing a paint finish that is more difficult to clean in a room full of kids. The more intense shine, the easier to clean.

Although creating your perfect interior may be a more complex project than you expected, it doesn’t have to be stressful.

Enjoy the beauty of discovering what works best for your home and let the feeling of accomplishment sink it when it’s all done.
